A single-family home in Sunyer (Lleida) centered around a courtyard, toward which the living spaces are oriented. The layout forms an “L” shape, positioned to take advantage of the best possible orientation through the use of stepped setbacks in the facade walls.

This arrangement ensures that the rooms are well-ventilated, naturally lit, and highly private; at the same time, the spaces are positioned in relation to one another to create expansive sightlines and an engaging sense of spatial depth from any point within the house.

Each of the volumes that make up the “L” shape serves a distinct function, catering to either daytime or nighttime use. The “wet” rooms (bathrooms, kitchens, etc.) are strategically positioned at the intersection of these two functional zones. By placing the entrances at this very point of intersection, the circulation paths within the building are optimized for efficiency.

The design employs a hybrid structural system—combining a metal frame with composite floor slabs—along with an inner envelope consisting of a lightweight metal “balloon-frame” structure and cellulose-cement panels. This approach frees the brick exterior walls to function as a continuous, ventilated facade across their entire thickness; they offer high thermal inertia, moisture-regulating (hygroscopic) properties, and excellent insulation. In line with this design philosophy, the full thickness of these walls is left exposed and honestly expressed at the gable ends.

The project demonstrates a firm commitment to energy efficiency by incorporating a geothermal heat pump system for energy production, which supports radiant floor heating and cooling. It also features a controlled air-renewal system with heat recovery—with temperature and humidity regulation for incoming air—an electric vehicle charging point, and home automation controls. The result is a nearly zero-energy building (nZEB) that achieves the highest energy efficiency rating (A) and functions as a virtually passive home, with an annual energy consumption of less than 15 kWh/m² and emissions below 5 kg CO₂/m² per year.
