The building seeks to leverage the conditions offered by the site—which presents a challenging orientation—through mechanisms of separation and setbacks. These strategies multiply the surface area available for capturing natural light of varying qualities and from different orientations, tailored to the intended uses.
At its core, a constriction is introduced, creating tension at the point of vertical circulation; this gives rise to two courtyards that span the full height of the building, connecting to the staircase as well as the double-height living-dining area and the views toward the rear garden—a design that enhances natural light within the interior spaces while serving as a thermal and acoustic buffer.
The building section illustrates how the structure functions: through the control and management of air and light under natural conditions. In winter, it serves to regulate heat loss from air exchange, absorb the high internal heat load—retained by the thermal inertia of the concrete walls—and draw in fresh air from the courtyard, which acts as a natural heat-recovery system. In summer, it facilitates heat dissipation by maximizing airflow, drawing air in from the northeast-facing, vegetated courtyards.
