In recent times, in the historic centers of European cities, various experiences have taken place in the reconstruction of their historic areas, driven by the need to convert and provide new uses to buildings and spaces deteriorated by the passage of time or by some accidental catastrophe.
Facing the construction of social housing in a historical center, grouped and serial, would suggest the establishment of parallelisms between tasks with simple functions and complex purposes, and which places the creation of contemporary housing before the imperative need to standardize.
The added concern to provide the homes, despite their location in a historic center with an Arab heritage, with conditions of sun exposure, ventilation, insulation, etc., typical of the new social typologies in peri-urban areas, leads to the decision to form a central patio element which, in addition to functioning as a thermal regulator and favoring the renewal of air due to the solar chimney effect, allows the accesses to be articulated through external walkways.
With regard to housing, the economic system forces the rationalization and standardization of affordable or social housing. But, on the other hand, the increasing complexity of our social requirements (singles, single-parent families, elderly people, immigration with large family structures, etc…) requires flexibility. To achieve this purpose, the project tries to break with the traditional allocation of the number of units per housing, transcending the types and incorporating elements of mobile furniture that allow the spaces to be adapted in number and/or size to the user’s needs or family or personal evolution, life changes, etc…
